Surfing in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, one of the best places to surf in January

If you’re wondering where to surf in February, consider the Canary Islands. This archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa has some seriously incredible surf.

The islands’ volcanic origins have created an array of breaks – reefs, points and beach breaks, catering to all levels of experience.

February is prime time here, as Atlantic swells make their way to these shores, and the winds tend to often be offshore, offering the best conditions for surfers.

Tenerife and Fuerteventura, two of the larger islands, are often the go-to February surf destinations, with popular surf spots like El Cotillo and La Izquierda.

The surf culture is vibrant in local towns, with numerous surf shops and schools adding to the allure. It’s worth noting, however, that some breaks are not for the faint-hearted, especially during the peak of the swell. Be sure to follow important surf safety tips to stay safe out there.

2. Nicaragua- Best tropical surf destination in February for beginner surfers

BeginnersBay surfing in Popoyo

If you’re on the hunt for the best places to surf in February, Nicaragua should definitely be on your list. Especially if you’re a beginner surfer!

This Central American gem, neatly tucked between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, holds a treasure of surfing hotspots that cater to beginners and advanced surfers alike.

The Pacific coastline boasts over a dozen internationally renowned surf spots, including the Popoyo surf break, Playa Colorado surf break, and the Playa Maderas surf break. February brings in the dry season, characterized by steady offshore winds, generated by Lake Nicaragua, that groom the waves to perfection and deliver consistent barrels.

I recently took a February surf trip to Nicaragua to Popoyo, one of the best surf spots in Nicaragua.. It was a little small while we were there, and I think it’s the PERFECT February surf destination for beginner surfers.

Nicaragua surf conditions in February

Nicaragua offers excellent surf conditions in February, with the Pacific Coast providing consistent waves due to the prevailing offshore winds. Wave sizes generally range from 3 to 5 feet, but it can get bigger, or be much smaller.

While the well-known spots can get crowded, especially over weekends, exploring off the beaten path or timing your sessions for early mornings or late evenings can afford quieter surf sessions.

I particularly noticed this in Popoyo- nobody ever got in the water before 7:30 am! Our hotel, Magnific Rock, was perched right over the Popoyo surf breaks so I could watch and see from my window, so I know EXACTLY when the surf got crowded here.

SO if you want the waves to yourself, 6 am is the time to go.
