Surfing at La Source in Taghazout

The best time to learn how to surf in Morocco is generally between September and April. Summer can also be a good time for beginners due to smaller and softer waves, but the beaches might be more crowded, and it can get very hot in July and August. The winter months offer bigger swells which are more suitable for experienced surfers.

Taghazout Surf Camp FAQs

Is Taghazout safe?

If you’re driving, be aware that road conditions and driving styles in Morocco can differ significantly from what you might be used to. Be cautious, particularly on rural roads, and do not drive in the dark.

Understanding local culture and customs is key. Morocco is a Muslim country, and while it’s modern in many ways, traditional values are still prevalent. Dressing modestly, for instance, can help avoid unwanted attention.

I’ve heard this from many travellers, and the biggest danger of a surf trip to Taghazout is getting sick from the water. Be sure to only drink bottled water during your trip, and be cautious of surfing after it rains.

Do you need a wetsuit to surf in Taghazout?

The temperature of the Atlantic Ocean around Taghazout ranges from 60°F (15.6°C) in December to 72°F (22.2°C) in July. So, I definitely recommend a wetsuit if you’re heading to one of these Taghazout surf camps.

You’ll want at least a 2-3 mm. For some surf spots it is advised to wear reef shoes. Check out our guide on surfing attire to get a better idea of what you might need for a surf trip to Taghazout!

Do you need a car to surf in Taghazout?

Taghazout is renowned for its variety of surf spots, many of which are within walking distance or a short drive from the village.

If you’re staying in or near Taghazout, several spots can be accessed on foot, especially for those who don’t mind carrying their boards for a bit. So, a car is not absolutely necessary, especially if you use local surf services, many surf camps provide transportation to the spots with the best conditions.

Is Taghazout expensive?

Taghazout is one of the cheapest places in the world to take a surf trip. Many of the surf camps on this list start at only $500 for an all inclusive week of surfing, and it doesn’t get much better than that!
